The speaker of this text is an African American pastor who is also gay. This is not common in today's world, as many churches and Christians do not believe that gay people are saved, much less can be pastors. I thought it was really cool how the pastor talked about his experiences growing up and when he realized that he was gay. He spoke about how his family were devout Christians but also he talked about when he first realized he was gay and how he explained that to his family. I appreciated how his family still accepted him and loved him no different even though it may have been against their religion. In other mentor texts about people coming out to their family, they were not accepted or were accepted just not respected. His family could have easily turned their back on him and were put in a difficult position within their beliefs and church community, however they continued to love their son and support him. I think more families should be like this and continue loving their kids even if they don't agree with them. This goes for political views as well. All the time I hear about families ripped apart just because they voted for two different people. I see this in my own family as well and have witnessed nasty fights and arguments break out between my uncle and grandfather. It breaks my heart because it has strained their relationship and you can see it every time they are together. I think everyone can be more like the pastor's parents and love other's despite differences.
